Thousands of students visited the Athens Science Festival 2023 to “Shape their future”!
For yet another year, the Athens Science Festival concluded with great success, attracting thousands of primary and secondary school students, as well as hundreds of university students and educators to the Technopolis City of Athens. During this year’s specially designed Student Edition ASF, students of all ages had the opportunity to explore various STEM professions, inspiring them to “Shape their future”. Over three consecutive days, visitors had the chance to attend exciting speeches, participate in innovative workshops, and witness impressive live experiments and interactive exhibits.
A plethora of imaginative and creative activities were presented by researchers and educators from research centers, universities, museums, scientific associations, educational organizations, and schools. The Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens actively participated in the festival with eight different activities, captivating young science enthusiasts. The Athena Research Center, the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, the National Hellenic Research Foundation, the BSRC “Alexander Fleming”, the Biomedical Research Foundation Academy of Athens (BRFAA), the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, and many other research and educational institutions presented multidisciplinary activities for all ages, showcasing impressive research achievements and technological advancements in various fields. The American College of Greece provided visitors with the opportunity to become “scientists for a day” through interactive exhibits and demonstrations.
Over the course of three days, the Technopolis City of Athens was filled with interactive exhibits, live science experiments, art, photography, and science exhibitions. At the “Roots & Shoots” booth, we were introduced to the program of Dr. Jane Goodall's Institute, which is being implemented in Greece by the educational organization Science Communication - SciCo. The program aims to inspire citizens to take action on the “issues” they identify in their communities. We discovered two projects from the program related to raising awareness about Mount Parnitha and the climate benefits of a vegetarian diet.
Furthermore, we had the honor of attending captivating speeches by esteemed scientists and professionals, during which they took us on exciting journeys and illuminated alternative career paths. Through fascinating presentations, we delved into the world of viruses, explored the emerging field of computational linguistics, unveiled the chemistry behind love, and much more. Experienced professionals from the Digital Gaming industry exchanged intriguing insights about the future of the sector and opportunities available for young gaming enthusiasts, in a panel discussion supported by Kaizen Gaming.
COSMOTE, the Main Sponsor of the festival, introduced us to the innovative application COSMOTE CHRONOS, which brings to life great monuments of the Acropolis of Athens on the mobile phone or tablet along with various historical information. The application is available free of charge and has been developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
We are renewing our appointment for 2024, when we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Athens Science Festival! In this anniversary five-day festival, scheduled from April 17th to April 21st, 2024, the focus will be on the Environment and Climate. Stay tuned for all the exciting details. Soon, we will invite you to submit your proposal and join us at the greatest celebration of science, technology, and innovation of Athens!
