STEM STARS Greece: Student Winners Named in Awards Ceremony

The U.S. Embassy in Athens and nonprofit organization SciCo are proud to announce the winners of the 2022 STEM STARS Greece Competition.  

First Place

Project: “A Design for an Affordable 2qubit Optical Quantum Computer”, a study on the operation of quantum computers, the basic mathematics needed to build them and respective results.  

Students: Konstantinos Pavlakis, Dimitrios Tzounakis.

Advisor: Mr. Evangelos Chatzistaurou

School: 1st and 2nd Senior High School of Thermi

 

Second Place

Project: “Measurement and transmission of seawater quality parameters”, a device that collects measurements of seawater quality and transmits them wirelessly to the internet.

Student: Dimitrios Deliakidis

Advisor: Mr. Panagiotis Deliakidis

School: 4th Senior High School of Alexandroupoli

 

Third Place

Project: “RoboDrone22”, a drone with specialized sensors, that detects the fire in a timely manner, monitors the area with a camera and in case of arson can identify the perpetrators.

Students: Apostolia Palaiologou, Chara-Maria Smporou, Christina Tsimpidi

Advisor: Mr. Savvas Tsolakis

School: 2nd Model High School of Volos

 

Fourth Place

Project: “STRAY ANIMALS”, an app that helps owners of lost pets locate their four-legged friends.

Students: Nikolaos Dermaris, Elias Paschopoulos, Ioannis Paschopoulos

Advisor: Mr. Loukianos Nikolaos Xaxiris

School: Dodonea School 

 

Fifth Place

Project: “Explore Athens”, a Machine Learning app which identifies sites of great importance and narrates their history.

Students: Christiana Georgakopoulou, Chrysoula Vamvaka, Leonidas Vournas 

Advisor: Mr. Andreas Karampelas

School: Athens College 

 

The STEM Stars Greece final competition took place on Saturday, April 2, at Technopolis City of Athens, as part of the Athens Science Festival 2022.  Twenty-three teams competed in the finals, representing public and private schools from across Greece.  Each team presented their project to an expert judging committee and also responded to panel questions.  The jury then evaluated the projects based on A) The main idea B) The scientific methodology C) The results D) Personal skills.

The winning teams were announced during an Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 2, 2022 as part of the Athens Science Festival.  Deputy Chief of Mission, of the United States Embassy in Athens, Mr. David Burger, announced the first place. PwC Greece Technology Associate, Mr. GIannis Koutoulogenis, announced the second place.   Microsoft Hellas Industry Sector Lead in Education, for Greece, Cyprus & Malta, Giannis Anastasopoulos, announced third, fourth and fifth place. The two winning teams received Arduino training kits, while all five winning teams, win a position in a Microsoft online training (AI Fundamentals) and the chance to receive a Microsoft Certification.

Additionally, two of the top teams will represent Greece in the 2022 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Official Regeneron ISEF events will take place May 7-13.  This is the second time that Greece will participate in this international student competition, held annually in the United States.  Based on ISEF’s 2022 competition guidelines and participant requirements, the following two projects will represent Greece in the virtual event: "A Design for an Affordable 2qubit Optical Quantum Computer” and “Measurement and transmission of seawater quality parameters”

In the context of the ceremony, speeches were held in order to inspire the participants:

- Ana Mutak, Learning Solution Specialist in Education, Microsoft Central and Eastern Europe

- Fotini Papaleonidopoulou, PhD researcher at Francis Crick Institute

- Ilias Psyroykis, Co-Founder & CEO at SPIN - Space Innovation
