MIND THE LAB, INSPIRED BY THE WELL-KNOWN "MIND THE GAP" NOTICE IN METRO STATIONS, IS A BREAKTHROUGH SCIENCE COMMUNICATION APPROACH THAT AIMS TO BRING SCIENCE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
The idea behind this project is to bring science closer to people, by organizing outreach events, in places, where thousands of people, who don't necessarily have a pre-existing interest in science, pass by: The Metro. Impressive scientific experiments, innovative technological applications, interactive games, and artistic events demonstrated by enthusiastic scientists, make up the activities in each station. In that way, people of all ages, interests, and levels of scientific literacy, have the opportunity to become engaged with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), helping stimulate a curiosity they may not have even realised they had.
Mind the Lab was the idea of a Greek science communicator and a social entrepreneur, Theo Anagnostopoulos. Its aspiration was to excite, both young and old, to act as a science teaser and hopefully inspire people across generations and walks of life to take a renewed personal interest in modern science. In February 2017, it was launched and piloted for the first time in 8 metro stations in Athens, by the non-profit organization SciCo.
Except for Athens, Mind the Lab has also been hosted in various other cities, such as Berlin, Edinburgh and Madrid. Furthermore, it has participated and distinguished itself in science engagement events around the world. Most recently, it was part of the Berlin Science Week and was selected as one of the finalist projects at Falling Walls Engage 2018.
Our future goal is to establish a common day when Mind the Lab will take place simultaneously in several countries around the world in order to maximise its impact. If you are interested in organising a local Mind The Lab event, please contact info@scico.gr.
