THE MATHS IN MOTION ERASMUS+ KA2 PROJECT HAS BEEN LAUNCHED TO DEVELOP CURRICULUM AND LEARNING MATERIALS RELATED TO MOVEMENT AS AN INNOVATIVE AND INCLUSIVE WAY TO TEACH MATHEMATICS.
The Maths in Motion methodology was collaboratively developed and field-tested by an international group of teachers, dancers, science communication experts, researchers, and mathematicians. All of the people involved shared the common perspective that dance and mathematics have something in common, and that dance would, therefore, be an excellent aid in mathematics education.
The development of the program lasted from 2017 to 2019, and as part of its implementation, workshops have been carried out for both students and teachers (train the trainers). The adult workshops promote the Maths in Motion methodology, which aims to inspire and provide teachers with the tools to apply it to their classroom. At the same time, the workshops for students enrich the teaching of the school material, offering a unique, hands-on learning experience.
A Maths in Motion workshop:
- puts the student at the center of the educational process
- allows everyone to be equally involved in the activities depending on their level
- includes visualization activities, which help to imprint knowledge on students' memory
- enhances students' creativity, through improvisation activities
- cultivates additional skills, such as mathematical and critical thinking, collaboration, and negotiation
Among the goals of the program was the creation of the Maths in Motion Toolkit and Workbook, where one can find instructions for teachers and creative learning activities, which combine music and body movement to explain basic mathematical concepts. These innovative activities can be taught regardless of nationality, culture, and learning skills.
The program is active in Greece by the Maths in Motion Greece team, which applies the values and philosophy of the program adapted to the Greek school reality. The team consists of mathematicians, educators, STE(A)M educators, specializing in tangible learning, theatrical play, music, and dance. From the beginning of the program until today, more than 225 teachers have been acquainted with Maths in Motion's methodology, whereas 4000 students were active participants in tangible learning activities, which aimed at explaining basic mathematical concepts. Workshops for students and teachers have been held during the events of the Athens Science Festival 2018 and 2019, while a music-kinetic performance of mathematics was presented at TedX Kids Illisos 2019.
