Athens Science Festival

The Athens Science Festival, the festival devoted to Science and Innovation since 2014, is an established cultural landmark in the field of Science, Technology, Innovation and Art in Greece!

For over 5 days every spring, residents and schools in and around Attica have the opportunity to explore scientific and technological advancements in an entertaining, innovative and interactive manner. At the same time, researchers, distinguished scientists, educators and artists give their best to communicate science and indulge the visitors to participate in their experience with it.

Since its introduction to the people of Athens in 2014, Athens Science Festival has collaborated with more than 5,000 scientific associates, 590 speakers, 250 artists and 1,400 volunteers. The Festival is repeatedly justifying its social impact having exceeded initial expectations and having reached out to more than 107,000 visitors over the past 5 years. As such, the Athens Science Festival is righteously considered as one of the largest science and technology festivals in Greece.

Every year the Athens Science Festival keeps its promise: it links our everyday life to science and highlights the important role of science and technology in the society; by presenting and demonstrating high quality scientific research conducted in Greek academic institutions, by providing dialogue platforms where we can explore insights to complex and controversial scientific issues, by inspiring and creating high standards in the field of science communication and by encouraging young people to consider a science related career. Last but not least, the Athens Science Festival has managed to continuously show to people of all backgrounds and age that science is not only about knowledge but can also be recreational and fun.

The Athens Science Festival is organized annually by the educational organisation “Science Communication – SciCo”, the British Council, the Technopolis of the City of Athens, the Onassis Foundation Scholars’ Association and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology with the invaluable contribution from a plethora of academics, research and educational institutions.

Due to its success in engaging the public with science in Athens, this fun and educational festival on Science and Innovation has already escaped the borders of the Greek capital to other cities, such as in Thessaloniki, Larissa (ThSF), Patras and Cyprus.  Moreover,  other regions around Greece, will also be hosting this special event.

 Athens Science Festival 2019

Do we still burn coal? When do we plan to stop doing it? What do we know about properly managing natural resources? Do we recycle correctly? Knowing what is right and wrong is not always enough to make our ambitious environmental goals a reality. Social and economic barriers are often confronted and intertwined.

The solution lies in sustainability and “knowledge economy”, thus the Athens Science Festival 2019 will focus on this area! Together we will explore all challenges linked with living a sustainable everyday life, we will share good practices in order to reduce our environmental footprint and plan a future where global warming is in line with growth. An unforgettable experience awaits this year’s festival audience: observation and demonstration will give way to exploration and experimentation and all visitors will become part of science in the most interactive and entertaining way!

The Festival is organized around several thematic areas and we are adressing an open invitation to the participants of this year’s festival so as to plan their actions by prioritizing issues that highlight the following scientific areas:

Green Development / Cyclical Economy / Bio-Economy / Energy / Biodiversity / Climate Change / Ecosystems / Water Resources / Soil/ Forests

Since 2014, Athens Science Festival is bringing every year young and old people close to science. It demonstrates modern scientific and technological achievements and brings new knowledge through a continuous and open dialogue with the public.

However, this year we are setting a new and more tempting bet: to make the visitor part of the science. In ASF2019, observation and demonstration are substituted with exploration and experimentation. Through hands-on and experiential activities, our purpose is to offer an unforgettable experience and to invite the audience to take science on their “hands”. We are therefore urging ASF19 participants to design experiential educational workshops and events for Festival visitors, offering the public the joy of participation.

Furthermore, due to the renovation of the Technopolis Central Amphitheater, speeches will be restricted on this year’s festival, and emphasis will be put on educational workshops for adult and experiential workshops.

In addition, responding to public’s desire for more scientific activities not only for children but for all ages throughout the day, we will seek to enhance the afternoon zone with workshops, experiments and experiential activities. We are looking forward to your proposals in order to organize a Festive, Attractive, Powerful and Fresh Festival, but most important a Festival that ensures that the public is aware of and engaged with the great challenges facing our planet!

The Athens Science Festival 2019 is organized by the educational organization “Science Communication – SciCo”, the British Council, the Technopolis City of Athens, the Onassis Scholars’ Association, the Ministry of Energy and Environment and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, in collaboration with more than 120 academic, research and educational institutions, and with the support of 250 volunteers. Strategic partner of the Athens Science Festival 2019 is the State Scholarships Foundation- IKY.

There are target zones at the festival:  Weekdays – the mornings we are targeting mainly at schools. afternoon and evening zone is targeting adult audiences, while the festival will be addressing to families and the general public during the weekends.
