Athens Science Virtual Festival 2021

Η εποχή των ηρώων
An era of heroes

27-29 March 2021

3 days of science, technology and innovation | 60 slots of online events | 50 speakers 8 countries | 3 Nobel Prize winners | 100 demonstration experiments | celebrity science | chemistry shows | documentaries | free parallel events for young and old!

Every difficult period gives birth to its own protagonists, its own heroes. Athens Science Festival acquires a new, digital form and returns renewed in order to transport us to the "era of heroes"! From March 27 to 29, 2021, the largest science festival in the country will broadcast online and "live" from the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, not only the most recent developments in the fields of science, technology, and innovation, but also the relationship between science with art.

The pandemic and its devastating effects on the entire planet created a new category of heroes, primarily in the field of science. With their unique "superpowers", a strong will to offer and the sense of duty towards the "other", they struggle daily to achieve the impossible: to expand the limits of human knowledge and to provide solutions where needed. These scientists, of all specialties, will be honored during the Athens Science Festival 2021.

Through live speeches, participatory experiential workshops, impressive demonstration experiments, and other innovative digital actions, the public will have the opportunity to get to know some of the most distinguished scientists worldwide coming from Greece, America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel, the Netherlands, Germany, and Ukraine. Everyone's participation this year will be dynamic. Online visitors will not be mere spectators of the action but will have the opportunity to intervene online, thus turning the festival into a digital, multidimensional scientific event, an interactive meeting point, accessible to all, wherever they are.

Many people will participate in this year's festival and will be hosted on the platform of the Athens Science Festival, such as:

2003 Nobel laureate in Chemistry Peter Agre, a renowned professor, and director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Malaria Research, will talk about the importance of expanding the potential of medicine in the progress and evolution of humanity. In his special talk entitled "Shaping a Better World through Medicine", Peter Agre will present medical science as a source of optimism for the future of our species.

Susan Schneider, an internationally renowned academic, distinguished philosopher, and author of the successful book "Artificial You: AI and the Future of the Mind", will talk about "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of the Mind", will discuss the philosophical implications of technology and, in particular, the attempt to reproduce consciousness by artificial means. This is a topical issue, which will concern us more and more in the near future.

The famous doctor and professor of Physiology at the University of Maastricht, Mark Post, will present an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative to the way beef is produced. In his talk entitled "Delicious burger from ... stem cells!", Post will develop the technical challenges, opportunities and some amazing social impact that synthetic meat production in laboratories has.

Since 2014, Athens Science Festival has been welcoming all those who are 'thirsty' to acquire scientific knowledge through different tools and ways of learning, all those who wish to experience the uniqueness of discovering modern scientific and technological progress. The aim of this year's festival is for everyone, without exception, to recognize and honor the role and contribution of scientists and the scientific community in our daily lives. "The Era of Heroes" is here. Let’s explore it all together, in another exciting science festival: ASF 2021!
